Horoscope Match making – Ashtkoot Milan, Kundli Milan

Ashtakoot Guna Milan is an astrological system of matching the compatibility factor of the bride and the groom before getting married. In this system the Moon sign i.e rashi, Birth Nakshatras and the Moon’s Chart of the bride and groom are taken into account for assessing the compatability in between them.
In this astrological system, eight factors are considered into account, which are :

  1. Varna – Matching of the castes (1 Point)
  2. Vashya – Attraction (2 Points)
  3. Tara – Longevity of either (3 Points)
  4. Yoni – Nature and characteristics (4 Points)
  5. Graha Maitri – Natural friendship (5 Points)
  6. Gan – Mental Compatibility (6 Points)
  7. Bhakoot – Relative influence of one on the other (7 Points)
  8. Nadi – possibility of child birth (8 Points)

1.Varna Vichar

Vedic astrology has divided the signs in four different castes known as Brahman, Kshatriya, Vashya and Shudra. Cancer, Pisces and Scorpio are a part of the Brahmana Varna. Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are a part of the Kshatriya Varna. Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are a part of the Vaishya Varna. Gemini, Libra and Aquarius are a part of the Shudra Varna.

If the Varna of boy is superior or equal to the Varna of girl then 1 point is assigned. No points are assigned if none of these conditions are satisfied.

On the other hand, if the Varna of boy is inferior to Varna of girl but the lord of the sign of the groom is superior to that of the bride, then the match is considered to be auspicious.

2.Vashya Vichar

In Vashya Vichar 12 signs are equally divided into different categories. Gemini, Virgo, Libra and Sagittarius falls under the category of 1 to 15 degree, where Aquarius is Dwipda.

Aries, Taurus, Sagittarius are placed between 15 to 30 degree, Capricorn lies in the first phase of Chatushpad in 0 to 15 degree. Cancer and Capricorn lies in the later phase of 15 to 30 degree.

Pisces comes under the category of jalchar, Leo is considered to be vanchar and Scorpio is Keet. 2 points are assigned to this Milan.

Two points are awarded if Vashya of the bride and the groom are same. If one is Vashya and the other is Shatru, then only 1 point is awarded in this condition. On the other hand, if one is vashya and the other is bhakshak then only ½ points are awarded. No points are awarded if one is shatru and the other is bhakshak.

3.Taara Milan

Taara milan is the third part of the procedure of kundali milan. 3 points have been given to this Milan. The birth Nakshatra of the bride and the groom are analyzed for Taara Milan. Nakshatra from the groom to the Nakshatra of the bride are calculated to get the results. In the same way, Nakshatra from the bride to the Nakshatra of the groom are calculated.
Moving on, Vedic astrology assigns nine kinds of Taras to different nakshatras and hence all 27 nakshatras are divided into 9 groups of Taras containing 3 nakshatras each. Tara is calculated from the birth nakshatra of a native according to the following rules laid by Vedic astrology.

Birth nakshatra is taken as 1st nakshatra of the native and it is called Janma Tara.
2nd nakshatra from birth nakshatra is called Sampat Tara.
3rd nakshatra from birth nakshatra is called Vipat Tara.
4th nakshatra from birth nakshatra is called Kshem or Chhem Tara.
5th nakshatra from birth nakshatra is called Pratyari Tara.
6th nakshatra from birth nakshatra is called Sadhak Tara.
7th nakshatra from birth nakshatra is called Vadh Tara.
8th nakshatra form birth nakshatra is called Mitra Tara.
9th nakshatra from birth nakshatra is called Ati-Mitra Tara.
10th nakshatra from birth nakshatra is taken as 1st nakshatra,
11th nakshatra from birth nakshatra is taken as 2nd nakshatra and this process goes on like this until 27th nakshatra from birth nakshatra, which is taken as 9th nakshatra and it is called Ati-Mitra Tara. For example, if Moon is placed in Ashwini nakshatra in the birth horoscope of a native, then Ashwini nakshatra is this native’s birth nakshatra and Janma Tara; and rest of the nakshatras are called Sampat to Ati-Mitra Taras as per the above mentioned rule of Vedic astrology. Following is the table of Tara relation for a native having his birth nakshatra as Ashwini nakshatra.
Similarly, Tara relation can be found for all other birth nakshatras, using this procedure. According to the rules of Vedic astrology, 3rd, 5th and 7th nakshatra from the birth nakshatra of a native are considered as malefic or inauspicious nakshatras for the native. The same rule is applied in the process of Gun Milan while doing match making. According to Gun Milan, the distance of Janma nakshatra of boy from girl and girl from boy is calculated and the resultant number is divided by 9 in both the cases. The remainder is considered as the number of Tara for both boy and girl.
Moving on, if Tara of boy is 3rd, 5th or 7th with respect to birth nakshatra of girl, it is considered as a malefic or inauspicious Tara and similarly, if Tara of girl is 3rd, 5th or 7th with respect to Janma nakshatra of boy, it is considered as a malefic or inauspicious Tara. This way, the Tara relation for both boy and girl is calculated and then they are compared with each other for the purpose of assigning Gunas to the combination. If Tara for both boy and girl is auspicious, 3 out of 3 Gunas are assigned for Tara match and as the auspiciousness of Taras decreases; the score or Guna assigned for Tara matching also reduces in number.

Whenever there is a match of Shubh or auspicious and Ashubh or inauspicious Taras, Tara Dosh is said to be formed in such match making. It should be noted that both Taras can’t be Ashubh or inauspicious at the same time as the net total of both Taras will always come out to be 9 or 0 and a combination of 3, 5 and 7 which are the inauspicious Taras can never make a 9. For example, if Tara for boy is 3, then Tara for girl is 6, which gives us one Shubh Tara and one Ashubh Tara. Accordingly, Tara Dosh is said to be formed in such match making. If a combination of 0-0, 1-8 or 8-1 is present in Tara match, 3 out of 3 points or Gunas are assigned for Tara match in such a case of horoscope matching.

Vedic astrology associates Tara with destiny and other important aspects of the native; and it is believed that the presence of Tara Dosh in horoscope matching can create serious problems for the couple under consideration for match making. These problems can start from delays and disturbances in many spheres of their lives and they can go up to divorce or death of one of the partners, as per the scriptures of Vedic astrology. This is why Tara Dosh is also considered as a strong dosh in Vedic astrology.

It can be seen from the above mentioned data that there are only 9 combinations for Tara match based on the birth nakshatra of boy and girl; and Taras assigned to these combinations of nakshatras are 0-0, 1-8, 2-7, 3-6, 4-5, 5-4, 6-3, 7-2 and 8-1. Moving ahead, 6 out of these 9 combinations form Tara Dosh in match making according to the rules of Gun Milan, because 6 out of these 9 combinations include a number 3, 5 or 7 which are considered as Ashubh or inauspicious numbers in this combination. Hence it can be calculated that about 66% cases of match making are having Tara Dosh on average; according to Gun Milan.

Accordingly, 66% of the marriages should be suffering from the problems associated with Tara Dosh, which means that every second girl on average is prohibited for a boy and every second boy is prohibited for a girl, merely on the basis of Tara Dosh. It should also be noted that Tara Dosh is only one of the defects formed during match making; and there are many other defects like Manglik Dosh, Kaal Sarp Yog, Pitra Dosh, Nadi Dosh, Bhakut Dosh, Graha Maitri Dosh, Gan Dosh, Yoni Dosh and other defects of this kind, which may come to the scene.

Each one of these defects is capable of causing much more serious problems in 35 to 50% marriages according to the prevalent definitions of these defects. Taking everything into consideration, it can be easily said that a high percentage of marriages across the world should face serious problems and many of them should end up in divorces or deaths of partners, as indicated by this system of Gun Milan. This is clearly not happening in real practice and therefore a different approach needs to be taken towards the bad results indicated by defects like Tara Dosh.

In my experience of horoscope matching which now goes over thousands of cases of match making, I have witnessed hundreds of successful marriages despite the presence of Tara Dosh in match making. This happened due to fact that the overall horoscopes of these couples were giving very good indications about the marriages of these couples as the positive factors present in these horoscopes reduced the malefic effects of Tara Dosh to great extent. Hence Tara Dosh could not cause any significant damage in these marriages.

Hence it should be kept in mind that the formation of Tara Dosh during horoscope matching can cause significant problems in the marriage of a couple under consideration, only if such Tara Dosh is supported by some other malefic defects present in one or both the horoscopes. Tara Dosh is not capable of causing serious damages in the marriage of a couple on its own, in most cases. It should also be noted that the presence of good yogas in one or both the horoscopes can reduce the bad effects of Tara Dosh to great extents and accordingly, this defect may not cause any significant damage in such a marriage.

Therefore the couples having Tara Dosh during match making should not lose heart and they should get their horoscopes matched properly in order to know whether such Tara Dosh is capable of causing any damage or not. It should also be noted that the malefic effects of Tara Dosh can be rectified with astrological remedies like Poojas, Yantras and donations in most cases, which gives us one more reason for not being afraid of Tara
bal doshsa.

The nakshatra of the the bride and the groom are divided by 9 and the result is known as tara. If the remainder is 3, 5 or 7, then the match is not considered auspicious for the marriage. In this case, no points are awarded. However, 1.5 points are awarded if one person has auspicious tara and the other has inauspicious tara and 3 points if both of them have auspicious tara.

4.Yoni Vichar

Before moving ahead, let’s first get to know as to what Yoni is in a horoscope and what the importance of Yoni is in the process of match making done through Gun Milan. We know that all nine planets called navagraha in Vedic astrology are always on their journey from one sign to the other and from one nakshatra to the other. Accordingly, Moon also travels from Ashwini nakshatra to Revati nakshatra and from Aries to Pisces in a cyclic movement and at any given point of time and place; Moon is present in a particular nakshatra and in a particular sign. For example, let’s assume that Moon is present in Rohini nakshatra and Taurus sign at this time and place. Accordingly, all the people born during this time and place will have Moon placed in Rohini nakshatra and in Taurus sign in their birth horoscopes. Hence the birth nakshatra of these natives is Rohini and the birth sign or Raashi as it is called in Vedic astrology, of these natives is Taurus.
Yoni Milan has been given four points in the process of Kundali milan. According to the scriptures, we bring a Yoni along with us whenever we are born. It is believed that a glimpse of a person’s Yoni can be seen in his behaviour and attitude. Yoni of a person is analyzed on the basis of the nakshatra we was born in. There are some Yonis which are enemies to each other. For example : Marjar (Cat) and Mushak (Mouse), Gau (Cow) and Vyagrah (Tiger). They can never get along well. Hence, we should try that the Yonis of the bride and the groom should not be enemies to each other while analyzing the kundali.

Similarly, an animal is assigned to each one of the 27 nakshatras and accordingly the Yoni of every nakshatra is decided based on these animals. The behavior of each of these animals towards each other has been decided by Vedic astrology and accordingly such behaviors between various pairs of these animals have been divided into categories like same, friendly, neutral, enemy and sworn enemy. Based on these categories, the system of Gun Milan decides as to how good or bad the Yoni match is between two nakshatras or between two individuals under consideration for match making. The system of Gun Milan assigns Gunas for Yoni match on the basis of following rules:

If the birth nakshatra animal of boy is same as the birth nakshatra animal of girl under consideration for match making, 4 out of 4 Gunas or points are assigned for Yoni match according to Gun Milan.

If the birth nakshatra animal of boy and the birth nakshatra animal of girl under consideration for match making are friendly towards each other, 3 out of 4 Gunas or points are assigned for Yoni match according to Gun Milan.

If the birth nakshatra animal of boy and the birth nakshatra animal of girl under consideration for match making are neutral towards each other, 2 out of 4 Gunas or points are assigned for Yoni match according to Gun Milan.

If the birth nakshatra animal of boy and the birth nakshatra animal of girl under consideration for match making are enemies towards each other, 1 out of 4 Gunas or points are assigned for Yoni match according to Gun Milan.

If the birth nakshatra animal of boy and the birth nakshatra animal of girl under consideration for match making are sworn enemies towards each other, 0 out of 4 Gunas or points are assigned for Yoni match according to Gun Milan.

For the convenience of readers, here is the point table for Yoni match:

In cases of match making where Yoni match gives a score of 0 or 1 according to Gun Milan, Yoni Dosh is said to be formed in the match making, which is associated with bad results related to physical incompatibility which in extreme cases can lead to arguments, separations or divorces. It should be noted that among the 27 nakshatras, 26 nakshatras have been assigned 13 yonis with 1 yoni for every 2 nakshatras. For example, Ashwini and Shatabhisha belong to Ashwa Yoni whereas Bharani and Revati belong to Gaj Yoni. The remaining 27th nakshatra called Uttarashada having mongoose Yoni is the only nakshatra to have a Yoni, not exhibited by any other nakshatra.

It can be seen from the above mentioned data that there are only 5 combinations for Yoni match based on the birth nakshatra of boy and girl; and 2 out of these 5 combinations form Yoni Dosh in match making according to Gun Milan system. From the chart, it can be said that about 30% cases of match making are having Yoni Dosh on average, according to Gun Milan. It means that 30% of the marriages should be suffering from the problems associated with Yoni Dosh, which further means that every second or third girl on average is prohibited for a boy and every second or third boy is prohibited for a girl, merely on the basis of Yoni Dosh.

As we know that most people who don’t belong to India don’t go through this process of horoscope matching and Gun Milan, every second or third marriage of the world should be facing troubles and problems indicated by Yoni Dosh. It should also be noted that Yoni Dosh is only one of the defects formed during match making and there are many other defects like Manglik Dosh, Kaal Sarp Dosh, Pitra Dosh, Nadi Dosh, Bhakut Dosh, Graha Maitri Dosh, Gan Dosh and other defects, each of which is capable of causing much more serious problems in 40 to 50% of the marriages, according to the prevalent definitions of these defects. Taking everything into consideration, it can be said that almost all the marriages in the world should face serious problems and many of them should end up in divorces or deaths of partners. This is not happening in real practice and therefore a different approach should be taken towards the bad results indicated by defects like Yoni Dosh.

In my experience of horoscope matching which now goes over thousands of cases of match making, I have witnessed hundreds of successful marriages despite the presence of Yoni Dosh in match making. This happened due to fact that the overall horoscopes of these couples were giving very good indications about the marriages of these couples as the positive factors present in these horoscopes reduced the malefic effects of Yoni Dosh to great extent. Hence Yoni Dosh could not cause any significant damage in these marriages.

Hence it should be kept in mind that the formation of Yoni Dosh during horoscope matching can cause significant problems in the marriage of a couple under consideration, only if such Yoni Dosh is supported by some other malefic defects present in one or both the horoscopes. Yoni Dosh is not capable of causing serious damages in the marriage of a couple on its own, in most cases. It should also be noted that the presence of good yogas in one or both the horoscopes can reduce the bad effects of Yoni Dosh to great extents and accordingly, this defect may not cause any significant damage in such a marriage.

Therefore the couples having Yoni Dosh during match making should not lose heart and they should get their horoscopes matched properly in order to know whether such Yoni Dosh is capable of causing any damage or not. It should also be noted that the malefic effects of Yoni Dosh can be rectified with astrological remedies like Poojas, Yantras and donations in most cases, which gives us one more reason for not being afraid of Yoni Dosh.
Bride and the groom belonging to same yoni are considered an auspicious match for a marriage. Over friendly Yonis of the bride and the groom are awarded 4 points. Whereas, simply friendly yonis are awarded 3 points, 2 points for easily compatible yoni and 1 point for common enmity. However, no point is awarded for highly enemy yonis.

The behaviour of the bride and the groom will be quite different from each other if one belongs to Deva Gana and the other belongs to Rakshasa Gana. These differences can lead to problems in marital life. The twenty seven Nakshatras have been categorized into three different parts i.e Deva, Manav and Rakshasa. Each gana comprises of nine nakshatras.

Gana Koot in Horoscope Matching

In Kundli milan / Horoscope matching all Nakshatras (stars) are divided into 3 group based on their nature being Divine (Deva), Human (Manushya) and demonic (Rakshasa) as given below:

Deva: Those born under the Deva Nakshatras are peace loving, quiet, helpful and forgiving.

Manushya: Those born under the Manushya Nakshtras are friendly but under circumstances may be very cruel and quarrelsome when provoked.

Rakshasa: Those born under the Rakshasa Nakshatra are quarrelsome, cruel, dominating and have a tendency to hurt others as they are selfish and keep self before others.

Those belonging to the same category get along well. A Deva Nakshatra and Manushya Nakshatra are passable. But a Deva or a Manushya will not pair well with Rakshasa.

Deva Boy – Deva Girl – 6 points in ashtkoot Guna milan
Manushya Boy – Manushya Girl – 6 points in ashtkoot Guna Milan
Rakshasa Boy – Rakshasa Girl – 6 points in ashtkoot Guna milan

Rakshasa Boy – Manushya Girl – 2 points in ashtkoot Guna Milan
Deva Girl – Rakshasa Boy – 0 points in ashtkoot guna Milan
Deva Boy – Rakshasa Girl – 0 points in ashtkoot guna Milan

With the above if you know your gana you can match how many points you will score in ashtkoot guna Milan during Horoscope Matching. Gana dosha is not good. Gana dosha is formed when the Gana score is zero in ashtkoot guna Milan. You need to check if Gana dosha gets cancelled before marriage, else there will be frequent quarrels, ego problems between the couple and chances of separation are also strong.

7.Bhakoot Vichar

It is also known as Rashikoot. 7 points are awarded to this milan. This an important part of the process of matching Kundalis. It is based on the Moon signs of the bride and the groom. The placement of the Moon in the Kundalis of the bride and the groom is analyzed in this Milan.

Shadashtak Yoga is formed if the birth sign of the groom and the bride forms a combination of 6-8. Similarly, Nava pancham Yoga is formed when the combination is 5-9. A combination of 2-12 will form a Dwidwadash dosha.

7 points are rewarded when both bride and the groom belong to the same sign or if the moon of both the partners is present on the axis of 1/7, 3/11 and 4/10. Whereas, no points are awarded when moon is placed on the axis of 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8.

Navpancham Dosha is formed when the moon sign of the bride is counted fifth from the moon sign of the groom. In this Dosha, the groom feels detached from the world. On the other hand, if the moon sign of the bride is counted ninth from the moon sign of the groom, then the bride abandons the world. The situation may settle down if the planets of both the partner are maitri.

The marital life will be full of sufferings when the lord of the moon signs of the bride and groom are enemies of each other in Shadashtak yoga. They have to face sudden accidents and financial problems from time to time. Direct or indirect enemies keep on harming the couple and their married life.

Bhakoot Dosha Remedies and exceptions:

So many people want to know how to remove Bhakoot dosha. It is very important that Bhakoot dosha gets cancelled, because unlike other dosha like Mangal dosha, which can destroy happy married life instantaneously, Bhakoot dosha destroys marriage gradually. However the pain and separation has been seen to be more in Bhakoot dosha leading to life become total hell and problematic.

One thing to note is that when we are talking about Bhakoot Dosha exception, the dosha does not finish completely till the remedies are performed. What we mean by exceptions is that the malefic effect of the dosha will not be as immediate and as strong as it would had been once the under given conditions are met.

Bhakoot Dosh is said to be lessened if any of the following conditions is observed in horoscope:

If the Lord of Moon Signs is same of both horoscopes, Bhakoot dosh is said to be lessened. The 6-8 Bhakoot dosh is said to be lessened in case of Aries-Scorpio and Taurus-Libra and 12-2 Bhakoot dosh is said to be lessened in case of Capricorn-Aquarius. Bhakoot dosha is less in this case but does not get completely cancelled.

Bhakoot dosha in Moon chart but cancellation in Navamsha (D9) as Navamsha chart is related to spouse.

The actual Malefic effect caused by Bhakoot Dosh gives different results to each couple depending upon the planetary aspects present in both the horoscopes. These defects can be potentially more serious if some other Dosha like Nadi Dosha, Gana Dosha and the weak Graha milan is there in the horoscope.

Bhakoot is the 2nd most important Koot in Ashtkoot Guna Milan or Horoscope Matching and having Bhakoot Dosha can be bad as it strongly suggest problems on the marital front. However there are Puja remedies for Bhakoot dosha which can cancel Bhakoot Dosha and the native can lead a very happy and normal life.

8.Naadi Dosha Vichar

Nadis are categorized in the Kundalis of the bride and the groom on the basis of birth Nakshatras. The twenty seven Nakshatras are divided into three categories. Aadi, Madhya and Antya are collectively known as Nadi Milan or Nadi Dosh. It is formed when the bride and the groom have the same Nadi.

Nadi is one of the important Kootas in matching making for the purpose of marriage in Vedic Astrology . It indicates health compatibility & out of 36 points in marital match making 8 points are given to Nadi . Nadi has given maximum points and hence regarded as the most important factor by astrologers. The Nadi disagreement between two is called as Nadi Dosha and generally regarded as the strict no for the marriage.

There are three different Nadis Adi / Adhya / Aadh (start), Madhya (middle) and Antya (end) and they represent “Prakriti” of an individual that is his/her body constitution. As per Ayurveda there are three different Prakritis- Vaat , Pita & Kapah The Nadi Adi, Madhya and Antya Nadi are equivalent to Vaat , Pita & Kapah respectively . The exact Nakshatra based classification is as follows

1) ADI / Adhya / Aadh Nadi : People born in Ashwani , Ardhra , Punarvasu , Uttaraphalguni , Hasta , Jyeshta , Moola , Satabisha & Poorvabhadrapada have Adi Nadi .

2) Madhya Nadi : People born in Bharani , Mrigasira , Pushya , Poorvaphalguni , Chitra , Anuradha , Poorvashadha , Dhanshita &
Uttarabhadrapada have Madhya Nadi .

3) Antya Nadi : People born in Kritika , Rohini , Aslesha , Magha , Swati , Vishakha , Uttarashadha , Sravana & Revati Nakshtras have Antya Nadi .

Cancellation of Asthkoot dosha

In Vedic astrology, emphasis has been given on matching kundalis before marriage. Kundalis are matched in order to analyze the compatibility that two people would have throughout their married life. In the modern times, Kundalis are matched so as to know if the other person would be preferable for you or not. Matching kundalis of two people tells us about the married life, compatibility and happiness throughout their married life.

Most of the people have only one point of view toward matching kundalis. According to them, two people have a greater compatibility if most of their Guna match. But, this is not true. Sometimes, two people have problems in their married life even when all the 36 Guna match with each other. This is because sometimes people do not get their Janma kundalis matched. Kundli Milan or Horoscope matching is a great way to know the relationship and is followed extensively in India before solemnizing marriage. One of the most important method to evaluate a relationship is the Ashtkoot Guna milan – where 8 points are matched. In this article I explain the Gana Koot – which has maximum 6 points and is the third most important koot in Guna milan. Gana Koot basically deals with temperament of the two people and matches how their temperament would effect the relationship. It is many times observed that partners are either hot headed, insensitive to the feelings of their partner, have big ego. Due to this there will be quarrels, arguments and marital life is totally damaged.
